About Gift Hang Tags

A gift tag gets looked at while someone is holding a present. That is a different job from a tag on a shelf, and it changes what matters: the string, the stock, and whether there is room to write a name.

What goes on a gift tag

  • To and from lines. Printed as ruled lines or left blank for handwriting. Uncoated stock takes pen ink; gloss lamination does not, so tell us if people will be writing on these.
  • A short message. Thank-yous, wedding favors and seasonal greetings all fit on a 2 x 3.5 inch tag with room to spare.
  • Nothing at all. Plenty of orders are blank tags in a chosen stock, shape and string, ready for the buyer to stamp or write on.

Choosing the string

  • Cotton twine. The default for kraft and recycled stock. It suits rustic and handmade presentation and knots without slipping.
  • Satin ribbon. Reads as more expensive, and it is what most luxury packaging uses.
  • Elastic loop. Worth choosing when a gift is opened and re-wrapped, or when the tag needs to go on and off a box repeatedly.
  • Bead chain. Rarely used on gifts, but it holds up in a retail display where tags get handled all day.

Sizes that suit a gift rather than a shelf

  • 2 x 3.5 inches. The common size. Enough room for a name, a message and a logo without dominating the wrapping.
  • 2 x 2 inches. For small boxes, jars and favors, where a full-size tag looks out of proportion.
  • Die-cut shapes. Hearts, stars, baubles and tickets with notched ends. Free die and plates are included, so a shape costs no more than a rectangle.

Ordering

  • Minimum 100 tags,. from $0.02 each, with the price falling as the quantity rises.
